The 3rd Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction Announce the Winners in Region Europe

On September 15th, 2011 Award ceremony of the 3rd Holcim Awards winners for the European region was held in Milan.

Projects from Germany, Belgium and Italy became the winners in the main Competition category and took gold, silver and bronze respectively. Projects from Finland, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands received Acknowledgement prizes, while students from the AA School of Architecture in UK and Spanish Universities, the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and the Universidad de Sevilla in Spain were awarded prizes in the «Next Generation» category. 10 winners have demonstrated really fabulous projects and shared a common prize fund in the amount of USD 300,000. With their projects they have proved, that «sustainable construction» is an essential part of life for Europeans and modern architecture can and should respond both to intensified urbanization and innovation in building materials and construction techniques. All the winners will continue to compete in the Global Holcim Awards next year, and will also struggle for Global Holcim Innovation prizes which are being introduced in 2012 to coincide with the centennial anniversary of the Holcim Group. Although Russia was not among the winners, the biggest European country took the 4th place according to the amount of applications (57), losing out to Romania (58), Spain (70) and Italy (103). According to such results, its evident, that sustainable construction ideas are rapidly spread around Russian.
